Grace Bergenholtz passed away May 2, 2008, with her husband by her side. She was born to Okanogan County pioneers James and Mary (Slagle) Knowlton in Brewster on Oct. 25, 1921, and was the only one of her siblings delivered by Brewster doctor "Doc McKinley." Her family operated a dairy farm in Brewster and she graduated from Brewster High School. Grace met her future husband, Irvin (Buster) Bergenholtz, while she worked as an usher at the movie theater in Brewster. They were married at her parents home on July 14, 1941. This was also her parents wedding anniversary. They lived in numerous homes throughout Okanogan Country, following work for Buster until 1947, when they purchased an apple orchard in the Methow Valley. They lived 55 years in the Methow raising apples and girls. Grace helped work in the orchard raising, harvesting and sorting the apples. Following in her mothers footsteps, Grace was an active member of the Rebekah Lodge. Two of Graces great loves were reading and crossword puzzles. She was always reading at least one, if not two books at a time. All of her daughters are avid readers because of her example. Crocheting was her second love. When not reading, she had a crochet hook and yarn in her hands. The family has many Afghans made by Grace. We will always remember Grace as a strong, hardworking wife, mother, grand-mother and great-grandmother, who loved hummingbirds and yellow finches. To the world, you may be one person, but to one person you are the world. Grace is survived by her husband of 66 years, Irvin "Buster" Bergenholtz, and her four daughters, Mary Murray, husband James from Okanogan; Linda Galbraith, husband Dan from Newport; Audrea Miller, husband Ken from Beaverton, Ore.; and Dorothy Caille, husband Grover from Mansfield. She is also survived by one brother, John Knowlton and his wife Clara from Brewster, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one grandson, her parents, one brother and two sisters. Services will be held at Barnes Chapel on Wednesday (May 7) at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Beaver Creek Cemetery.
